Coming out of the Principles of Fairness Conference, held at the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) on Saturday July 30, 2005 was an action plan for moving forward. The action plan was put forward for support and endorsement of the 270 participants present. The action plan is outlined below.
- All 195 groups who have signed the Principles of Fairness document will be asked to ensure that the principles outlined in the Principles of Fairness document will be adhered to in their respective organizations.
- The Government of Trinidad and Tobago will be approached to formally accept the Principles of Fairness and to give an undertaking to implement them in all branches of Government and in all Government Institutions.
- Government will also be asked to prepare a code of conduct embodying the Principles to be circulated to all Government Departments and Institutions.
- If the Equal Opportunities Act is struck down by the Court, Government will be asked to introduce legislation which embodies the principles set out in the Equal Opportunities Act so that the country can have enforceable legislation on equality of opportunity.
- Government will also be asked to simplify the procedure for complainants to secure redress in Court under Constitution and otherwise. The procedure is far too costly and beyond the reach of the ordinary citizen. Legal Aid should be provided to all those who cannot afford to seek remedies available to them.
- A non-profit company called Principles of Fairness Limited will be established with a permanent office and a Board of Directors.
- The Committee will support those elements of a Code of Conduct for the media which prevent the broadcast of harmful material tendering to incite racial hatred and sow seeds of discord in the society.
- When the sub-committee under Clive Borely has completed its work and there is agreement on the programme for schools, the document will be distributed to all schools so that children and their teachers can become aware of the Principles of Fairness.
- One of the commitments of the Principles of Fairness is to press for Constitutional Reform. Two Committees have been established to pursue the Constitutional Reform exercise in collaboration with other interested parties. One is a Committee to make recommendations for a new constitution and the other is to propose extra–constitutional structures and institutions to ensure fidelity to the Principles of Fairness in Trinidad and Tobago.
