The UWI Estate Police Service provides services that are unique because of the people it serves. To a large extent, the Estate Police serves a younger, better educated, yet arguably mostly naïve constituency much different from the general population of the surrounding communities. The educational environment of the University therefore demands a service-oriented drive from the Security Department.
The Estate Police provides services not traditionally offered by security departments in other sectors of the society. The approach is positive in anticipating and preventing unsafe conditions and protecting individuals and property from the illegal acts of others.
In this regard, a Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (C.O.P.P.S.) approach has been adopted, to manage the operations and activities of the Security Department. This approach has led to a continuous reduction in reported crimes on and off the main Campus, over the last three years. |

Headed by Mr. Wayne Richardson, a graduate of UWI and Hugh Wooding Law School where he was admitted to practice as an Attorney-at-Law, the staff comprises an Assistant Director, one Sergeant, five Corporals and 64 Constables.
Additionally, the Department hires two private security firms to provide security services at the New Creative and Festival Arts Centre, Field Station and Hall of Residence at Mt Hope, Works Department and Staff Social Club.
The jurisdiction of the Security Department encompasses the Estate of the St. Augustine Campus (teaching, administration and residences) buildings, plant, machinery and equipment on and off Campus. The officers are deployed at strategic locations throughout the campus and work around-the-clock in shifts. UWI security also provides security to the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Mt Hope. |

Training |
| |
As part of the community policing, officers are trained in Customer Service, Microsoft NT Workshop stations, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Fundamentals of Management, Crime Scene Investigation, Dynamics of Community Policing, Industrial Psychology, One-on-One Control Tactics for Law Enforcement, Emergency Response Procedures, Use of Firearms, and Risk Analysis and Vulnerability Assessment. |

Joint Patrols on Campus Perimeter |
| |
The campus security also works collaboratively with the national police to ensure a safe and secure university. E999 Police continue to make periodic patrols on the perimeter of the Campus while Detectives attached to the St. Joseph Police Station have conducted successful exercises in the area. Additionally, intermittent K9 patrols operate at nights on Watts Street, Old Tim Street, Evans Street, Carmody Road, and St. Augustine Circular. Positive responses have been received from students resident in these areas regarding the K9 patrols. |

Student Awareness |
| |
Also, students and staff are continuously encouraged to be more vigilant and responsible on and off Campus and to take advantage of the support services available to them. In this regard, they are provided with brochures and pamphlets as well as lectures and discussions on aspects of personal safety and security. |
