Two first year students Nolana Lynch and Reignier Jeffrey will represent the University of the West Indies (UWI) at this year’s International Students Week at Ilmenau, Germany, from June 1 to 10, 2007.
The International Students Week Ilmenau (ISWI) is an organization which seeks to formulate solutions to some of the world’s major problems by facilitating interaction among persons at all levels of society, including students, lecturers and global public figures. One of its annual initiatives is the hosting of a world affairs conference at its home office the Technische Universitat (Technical University) in Ilmenau, Germany. One of the other main objectives of the conference is to expose residents of the little town of Ilmenau to a diversity of peoples as well as a rich cultural experience. Ilmenau is located in the Thuringia region at the base of the largest forested area of Germany, also fondly called, the greenheart of Germany.
This conference aims to unite university students from all over the globe, at different levels of their tertiary education, to discuss current pertinent global issues. The theme for this year’s conference is ' Time to think - live as if you will die tomorrow, learn as if you will live forever' with the main focus being on education, its definition being not exclusive to education in the classroom, its availability and its role in all aspects of our society.
Participants will be divided into a number of workgroups in order to discuss various sectors of education which they are most passionate about. The main topics of these workgroups include; Education as a Human Right, The Philosophy of Education, Education and Ecology, The Psychology of Learning, Education and Science, just to name a few.
