89 medical and 17 dental students take oath

School of Dentistry's Graduating Class of '07
 

An Oath Taking ceremony for the 17 dental and 89 medical graduates was held at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex on June 12, 2007. His Excellency Professor George Maxwell Richards, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Her Excellency Dr. Jean Ramjohn Richards headed the list of attendees which included family members, graduates, staff members, well wishers and specially invited guests who filled the auditorium. The event was organized by Deputy Dean, Professor Zulaika Ali.

The ceremony was chaired by Professor Samuel Ramsewak, Dean-Designate, who also brought greetings from the Faculty. Speakers who addressed the gathering included the Deputy Principal, Professor Gurmohan Kochhar; Dr. Peter Bhaggan, Secretary of the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago; and Dr. Andy Miles, President of the Dental Council of Trinidad & Tobago. Dr. Rohit Doon, Chief Medical Officer delivered the feature address. Valedictorian Dr. Divya Yogi-Morens spoke on behalf of the students.

Medical graduates at the St. Augustine Campus garnered 9 distinctions and 6 honours in obstetrics and gynaecology, 13 honours in medicine and 7 honours in surgery. Dr. Tricia Bernard shared the UWI medal for obstetrics and gynaecology and Dr. Carlene Mitchell shared the Sir Harry Annamunthodo prize for surgery. Dr. Sajid Ud-Din Kadir was awarded the prizes for best performance in surgery and medicine (donated by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals) and the Professor Rolf Richards Memorial Prize in Clinical Medicine donated by Medical Associates Hospital. Dr. Tricia Kavita Sankar received the Professor Zulaika Ali prize for the best performance in the final Objective Structured Clinical Examination; Dr. Tricia Bernard received the Dr. Fiona Phelps prize in obstetrics and gynaecology; Dr. Sarnia Singh, the RBTT prize for Community Medicine; Dr. Nadira Mahabir, the Dr. Chapman Boyd prize for the best community medicine clerkship; and Dr. Robert Ali, the Astra Zeneca prize for anaesthetics. In dentistry, Drs. Reychelle Powdhar, Nordia Bedward, Sarita Ramsubhag, Sekou Pemberton, Toni-Marie Elias and Vijay Bhatt won prizes for restorative dentistry, oral diseases and child dental health.
