Representatives of the leading black college in the USA, Spelman College, visited the campus in December last year to discuss the possibility of developing a three-week study abroad programme for Spelman students starting in 2008. The delegation of two included Dr. Margery Ganz, Director of Study Abroad and International Exchange, and Dr. Phillip Lewis, Associate Professor, Department of History.
During their visit they met with Dean Ian Robertson, Deputy Dean Claudius Fergus, and Dr. John Campbell of the Faculty of Humanities and Education as well as Dean Hamid Ghany and Sandra Khan of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Discussions were also held with Rawle Gibbons and Satanand Sharma of the Centre for Creative and Festival Arts.
UWI has an existing MOU with Spelman and already students from St. Augustine have participated in the exchange programme.
Spelman is a small, women’s college with a strong reputation for academic excellence.
Following recent discussions the road is paved for a reciprocal exchange of students.
