The student body of the University joined the rest of Trinidad & Tobago in celebrating carnival with an official launch on January 25. Hundreds of onlookers were treated to displays of costumes by three bands: “Unite The Band”, “Red Jokers” and “Lacaray”.
Popular soca tunes of the day were provided courtesy of some of the most favoured DJ’s, and of course, no carnival launch is complete without live performances. 3Suns, Lil Bits, Naya George & Invasion, Keegan “Chucky” Taylor, were all on hand to give the activity the live feel. The UWI Dance Theatre also did a routine with much fanfare and crowd appreciation.
To round off the traditional “Trini” mas appeal there were moko jumbies, blue and black devils, masqueraders and “plenty wining”. The activity was solely a student venture with the St. Augustine Students’ Guild supporting the event. Some of the sponsors who provided assistance were Blue Waters, Angostura, Digicel and the NCC.
The unity, fun atmosphere and the “wining” provided a small brain cooler for the diligent UWI students, especially those engaged in their final semester. The festivities concluded at 4:00 P.M. because classes were scheduled to continue after that hour.
