Steelpan Revolution

UWItoday Home

Prime Minister Patrick Manning unveiled a new high-tech steelpan developed by the faculty of Engineering at a lavish ceremony termed “Steelpan Revolution”, on July 14 at the University of the West Indies.

The extensive research was conducted by Professor Brian Copeland, Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering and now Dean of the Faculty of Engineering (FE). Other UWI researchers on the special committee established by PM Manning included Professor Clement Imbert also of the FE.

The new pans include the G-Pan, an improved double second, and one bass that will incorporate all existing basses. The new pan has 37 notes instead of the traditional 29 and is expected to improve the sound of steelpan on the whole.
