CHRC 52nd Scientific Meeting

Six 2006 graduates of the School of Advanced Nursing Education (SANE), Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, participated in the Caribbean Health Research Council (CHRC) 52nd Annual Scientific Meeting from May 2-5, 2007 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Two poster presentations entitled: Knowledge, attitude and practices of primary school teachers in relation to the potential HIV positive child and Hearing loss among secondary school students playing in a school steelband in Trinidad were displayed. The posters generated much interest and discussion.

UWISON Nursing and Midwifery Conference

SANE is also proud to announce its participation in the International Nursing Midwifery Conference hosted by the UWI School of Nursing (UWISON), Mona, Jamaica. The Conference entitled ‘Nursing Research Providing Evidence for Improved Nursing Practice’, was held from May 31-June 1, 2007 at the Jamaica conference Centre, Kingston, Jamaica

Final Year students of the BSc Nursing Program, SANE, delivered poster and oral presentations on issues related to: Utilization of Research: A study of registered nurses at the North Central Regional Health Authority; The prevalence of domestic violence among pregnant women in Trinidad; and A study to determine the intentions of newly trained registered nurses to migrate and the contributing factors in Trinidad and Tobago.

The abstracts were included in the second issue of The Caribbean Journal of Nursing and Midwifery, Volume 2, 2007. Ten students and three faculty members of SANE led by Dr. Meryl Price, Director, were among a contingent of 23 Trinidad and Tobago participants.

SANE’s Research Day

SANE hosted its second Students’ Research Day on June 6, 2007, at Amphitheatre A, EWMSC, Mt. Hope. The services of the External Examiners were utilized in judging the five presentations which investigated issues related to Registered Nurses utilization of research; domestic violence among pregnant women; Accident and Emergency nurses and managers perception of risk; nurse-patient ratio and quality of nursing care; and the intentions of newly trained nurses to migrate. Among those present to witness the presentations were students from the Nursing School of Port of Spain General Hospital, representatives of the Regional Health Authorities, COSTAATT, SANE alumni and colleagues.
