A five-day training workshop on Comparative Pathology was held in Kenya, from Wednesday, June 27 - Sunday, July 1, 2007. Sponsored and supported by the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the workshop was intended to provide tuition for young East African veterinary pathologists. The emphasis was on comparative aspects of disease, especially wildlife and non-mammalian species, necropsy, and the use of field diagnostic techniques.
The Comparative Pathology Workshop was run in collaboration with the University of Nairobi's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the National Museums of Kenya and was part of ongoing collaboration between UWI and the University of Nairobi. This workshop was organized by Professor John Cooper and Dr. Margaret Cooper, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, as a stepping-stone to developing a Memoranda of Understanding with the University of Nairobi. The 30 participants included four people from Tanzania and six from Uganda. In the Kenyan contingent were ten final-year veterinary students as well as postgraduates and animal disease research officers. A number of observers and visitors also attended.
The core of the workshop was three days of theoretical and practical teaching. A fourth day was set aside for a) histopathological and cytological studies, providing instruction in small groups and b) in-depth investigation of normal and pathological skeletal material from non-human primates. The fifth day consisted of fieldwork - a simulated outbreak of suspected avian influenza in wild birds in the Ololua Forest, on the outskirts of Nairobi.
Literature for participants was provided by a number of bodies including the Pathological Society, The Royal College of Pathologists, the Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners (CRFP), the Hunterian Museum and the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW). The course notes and other literature for the workshop were designed and produced by Sally Dowsett.
