But Quality of Intake is Tops!

The St. Augustine Campus continues to make positive strides on a number of fronts. The stories included on the other pages of this issue of UWItoday will confirm this.

How did we do on student intake this 2006-2007 academic year, however? First of all, we limited our intake to 4,000 students overall this year. This decision was taken at the end of the last academic year to give us some breathing space after significant increases year after year over the last five years. So in the current academic year (2006-2007) 3,530 new students have registered for degree programmes as undergraduates and 772 have registered for postgraduate degrees.

Meanwhile, a number of buildings will be ready for occupation over the next year making more space available for housing, teaching and learning and for the conduct of examinations at the end of each semester.

These include a temporary classroom facility which can hold three classes and up to 450 students at a time (already completed), the Milner Hall extension (150 rooms available at the end of October), the Institute of Critical Thinking (to be handed over at the end of September), the Student Administration Building (occupation to begin by December), the 450 seat auditorium and classroom building, phase one of the St. John’s Road Housing facility which will yield 200 additional rooms, expansion of Chemical Engineering which will house another 450 seat auditorium, four design studios and two classrooms each accommodating 100 students or more, all of which will be completed before August 2007.

A new state of the art tennis facility has also been completed and work is on going on the cricket ground and on the running tack, both due to be completed in 2007.

Although this year’s intake was not the largest (total 4,322 students), the St. Augustine Campus was able to attract a cohort of extremely bright and gifted students for the 2006-2007 academic year.

2,740 students have entered the University this year with scores of three B’s or better and close to 700 entered with four A’s.
