The
Department of Behavioural Sciences, Faculty
of Social Sciences, partnered with the University
of Denver (DU) to receive a grant from the
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs,
to develop a Resource and Education Centre
on the St Augustine campus for conflict
resolution.
To
begin the process of establishing this Centre,
representatives from DU visited the campus
during the week of December 7 – 10, 2004
to initiate a training programme, work collaboratively
on curriculum development and to structure
joint research in conflict resolution. A
team from UWI is expected to visit DU in
June 2005 to continue discussions on culturally
relevant conflict resolution models.
The
Grant will help to establish a Conflict
Resolution Centre at the UWI, St. Augustine
Campus which will offer a Master’s program
in conflict resolution/mediation at UWI.
The Grant will also be used to conduct research
in western theory-based concepts and models
of conflict resolution and mediation in
an international and culturally diverse
setting as well as develop models of conflict
resolution appropriate for the Caribbean
context.
The
first year (Sept 2004 to August 2005) of
the grant will provide opportunities for
participants from the two universities involved
to build working relations, to develop detailed
plans for the grant’s activities and to
begin the establishment of critical structures
and capacities to support the expansion
of teaching in conflict resolution/mediation
at UWI.
The
first year will see the beginning of faculty
and curriculum development at UWI as well
as the opening of the UWI Resource and Education
Centre. Faculty development for DU staff
will also take place, as will the exploration
of collaborative research projects between
UWI and DU.
