Table showing Summary of Crimes Reported to the Estate Police Department
(2000-2004)

According to statistics received from the Estate Police Department crime is on a downward trend at The University of the West Indies. Between August 1, 2004 and December 31, 2004, fourteen (14) crimes were reported. Of these nine (9) occurred on campus and five (5) off campus. Most Campus crimes involved petty theft. Off campus crimes tend to be robberies on the street or outside apartments.

This downward trend can be attributed to the increase in the number of Campus security officers, better collaboration and more effective support from the National Police Service, use of the shuttle service and rationalization of parking arrangements.

Last year there were sixty- three (63) reported crimes for the 12 months of 2004. Fifty (50) of these occurred on Campus and thirteen (13) outside. Last year, the Campus Police made a number of arrests and over 90 percent of those charged were convicted. Campus security officers also had to eject undesirables from the campus compound from time to time during the course of last year. Campus security continues to focus on making the Campus and its environs as crime free as possible.
