Evening University for Working Adults

UWI Today Home

Mr. Kerry Sumesar-Rai takes a question from one of the students in his Introduction to Public Policy class.

The Evening University at St. Augustine makes it possible for entrepreneurs and working adults to read for a UWI degree and remain productively employed. The intention is to impact on the level of productivity of the work force in Trinidad and Tobago by providing opportunities for working adults to continue their higher education, to retool and to improve on their professional strengths outside the hours of work. The net effect is that the firms in which they work become more competitive as workers become more productive and this in turn will make Trinidad and Tobago a more competitive country on a global scale.

Legal education at the masters level is now delivered on the St. Augustine campus through the Evening University, making it possible for our lawyers to continue their professional development and remain in a viable practice. The new BSc in Banking and Finance allows banking professionals in Trinidad who hold the Diploma in Banking to enter our degree programme at level two and so complete their degree in two years at UWI. The new MSc in Public Sector Management will prepare public servants for the next stage of e-Government and the challenges to statehood, governance and democracy which globalisation brings to our shores. At the undergraduate level the BSc in Computer Science in the Evening University makes it possible for our IT practitioners to become qualified in a very competitive field. The thrust of the Evening University is preparing Trinidad and Tobago to play a leading role in the global economy which puts UWI at the centre of human capital development in the region. Industrial Ecology, Horticulture and degrees in Engineering will soon be offered by the Evening University as UWI seeks to create opportunities in higher education for the ambitious, the disciplined and the committed. Day Entrepreneurs/Evening Scholars
Some of our Evening Students Say Why

I am Richard Silvano. I am an entrepreneur. I started my business, Good Food, recently and I know that I need to learn more about accounting, marketing, strategic planning and financial management. However, I could never attend University and keep my business going – one was bound to suffer.
The Evening University, UWI, St. Augustine is a dream opportunity for all entrepreneurs in this country. Now that I am reading for a management degree I know that my business will be in good hands – my own hands. I will now be able to manage my company much better. The Evening University has guaranteed the success of my business. The quality of the lecturers is second to none in the world and the delivery of the content is exceptional. The tutorials give all the support I need to come to terms with the content in the lectures. I am 28 and I think that any entrepreneur in this country who is serious about the success of his/her business should read for a management degree at the Evening University, UWI, St. Augustine.

I am Richards Wells. I am from Jamaica. I am an entrepreneur. My company is Havana Hut Cigars. I am reading for a Master’s degree at the Evening University, UWI, St. Augustine. I did my B.Sc. in Management Studies in Mona. The professors at the Evening University are world class. My only desire is for the Department to internationalise the delivery process by inviting a few distinguished West Indians to speak to the student body. As an entrepreneur I cannot complain about business. Business is good. In fact, it is great. The Evening University is affording me the chance to take my business to new levels of profitability in an increasingly globalised economy. I am a businessman and I have set out to get my Master’s from UWI. A UWI degree is an international passport. A UWI degree has history, equity and good standing anywhere in the world today.

Learning for the Future
I am Janice Taylor. I am the accountant at Mac Foods Limited. I am 42 years old and the Evening University has given me the chance to remain employed and to pursue the dream of studying Government and Politics. I always loved the study of Political Science. Now I can do it and expand my capabilities in another field, which makes me more marketable in both the public and private sectors. The entire experience of the Evening University is good. My only difficulty at this time is traffic congestion on the roadways, which makes it difficult for me to arrive at five in the evening for the start of some of my classes. My sister attends a University in the U.S. and she is encouraging me. She points out that whether it is the United States, Europe or the West Indies, there will always be difficulties and hurdles to overcome in higher education. That is the nature of any life challenge. I have no intention to fail. I am determined to take full advantage of this chance. I believe that through The University of the West Indies along with Government’s support through GATE, Trinidad and Tobago will achieve developed nation status by 2020. The Evening University is clearly an investment in the human capital development of our nation.
