Postgraduate Supervision Workshop: Good Practice Supervising Students for PhD Theses, Masters and Undergraduate Dissertations
Prof. Gina Wisker, Head, Centre for Learning and Teaching, University of Brighton, will facilitate an interactive three day workshop based on research into postgraduate and undergraduate student learning, research into supervisory practice, and the sharing of participants’ experiences and good practice. The workshop should be of use to both new and experienced undergraduate, masters and PhD supervisors.
By the end of the workshop participants should be engaged with issues and good practices of:
- advising undergraduate, masters and PhD students on the selection and refinement of titles, questions, underpinning theories, conceptual frameworks, methodology, research methods and the construction of effective proposals
- advising and supporting students on their transfers/progress reports/confirmation of candidature
- advising, supporting and training students on how to problematise, critically analyse, conceptualise, and express themselves articulately and coherently as they write alongside their research and finally as they write up
- advising, supporting and training students on undertaking a PhD viva
- managing and negotiating the supervisory relationship, including ways of dealing with difficulties and differences, and maintaining momentum
- supporting and empowering students through the processes of their undergraduate, masters and PhD research to completion, submission, defence, and beyond, re-writing, conferences, publications and jobs.
