Feature Speaker: Dr. Arshad Ahmad

Topic: Technology and Educational Practice

Dr. Arshad Ahmad is an Associate Professor and Director of the Finance Cooperative Programme at the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University. He has led his faculty with numerous pedagogical projects and innovations and has been recognized as a distinguished teacher. The Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education has also recognized him as a 3M Teaching Fellow, a programme that he now coordinates. In 2001 his thesis won the George L. Geis best dissertation award in higher education. Dr. Ahmad has authored three textbooks and numerous study guides, case studies, video series and CD-ROMS and web-based programmes. His research interests are cognitive and instructional psychology and the design of open-learning environments.

 

Judges

Chief Judge, Dr. Dale Roy, is Executive Director, Centre for Leadership in learning, McMaster University, Canada. His association with the Centre dates from 1979, first as an Educational Consultant and later as Director. He is particularly interested in helping lecturers, in documenting good teaching and in teacher through inquiry.  Dr. Roy was Coordinator of the 3M Teaching Fellowships Program for 15 years. This programme has been heralded as a unique project by universities in New Zealand and the United Kingdom precisely because of the joint cooperation between academia and the corporate world.

Prof. Stuart Bunt is a Professorial Fellow in Teaching and Learning at the University of Western Australia. He is Scientific Director of SymbioticA, the first art and biology lab situated in a science department.  Prof. Bunt has consulted and lectured on the nexus between Art/Science and Technology, exhibited in Arts Electronica and collaborated or helped produce a number of biotech art pieces revolving around emergent technologies in the biosciences.  He is also Senator at the University of Western Australia, Chief Executive of a biomedical software spin off company, Paradigm Diagnositcs, and founder of the Image Acquisition and Analysis Facility, UWA. Prof. Bunt is also President, UWA Academic Staff Association, Vice President, National Tertiary Education Union, UWA branch and Member of the National Research and Teaching committee of the NTEU.  Prof. Bunt has had numerous papers on nerve regeneration published in international journals. Along with other scientists, Dr. Bunt is continuing his research in finding a cure for spinal and other central nervous system injuries and is motivated by the hope of getting people out of wheel-chairs.

Prof. Gina Wisker is a Director of Learning and Teaching Development and is Coordinator of Women’s Studies, teaching English, Education and Women’s Studies at Anglia Polytechnic University, Cambridge. 

She is author of various books on Selective Education and English Literature and has been the keynote speaker at several conferences. She has taught other universities and is an expert examiner, having had to do external examinations fro teaching in Higher Education and at PhD level at various universities.
