Message from the Former Campus Principal

Dr Bhoendradatt Tewarie, Pro Vice Chancellor & Campus PrincipalAs the premier tertiary education institution in the region, the University of the West Indies is committed to ensuring the highest standards in teaching and learning for our students. It is precisely for this reason that the Instructional Development Unit (IDU) was founded in 1996, and, ten years later, it continues to enhance the quality of teaching of the University’s lecturers.

Throughout the year, the IDU conducts workshops that are designed to equip our academic staff with techniques that strengthen and augment their teaching skills. Key areas are constantly addressed, including Andragogy/Pedagogy; Curriculum Assessment; Active Learning Strategies and Technology. In addition to providing our staff with these professional development opportunities, the IDU offers consultations to address their individual needs. The idea is to improve the learning environment and to stimulate a learning culture.

The IDU continues to do a remarkable job, shown clearly by the quality of our graduates and the improvements in performance of our students over time. Our students will be the leaders and professionals of tomorrow and the University is constantly seeking to prepare them for the challenges that lie ahead by equipping them with the necessary tools: critical thinking and problem-solving skills and the ability to be creative and innovative. Such results can only be achieved in an environment where learning, self-discovery and exploration of new frontiers are at the heart of the education process.

In keeping with the ever-present need to be accessible and to be responsive to change, the IDU has developed this website. On their behalf, I invite you to browse through to see for yourself the many and varied benefits they have to offer you, as lifelong learners and students of life.
