THE
UWI ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
The
University of The West Indies fully appreciates the
fact that its day-to-day operations would, from time
to time, impact upon the environment. It acknowledges,
that the responsibility for preservation, protection
and commitment to the environment lies with campus
senior management. The University will also comply
with environmental legislation and conform to industry
best practices. It is will also continuously take
steps to:
• Ensure that environmental policies and practices are enforced at all
levels in each Faculty or Unit
• Increase
awareness among staff and students on environmental
issues and the University’s Environmental Policy
through promotional events thereby achieving some
behaviour modification.
• Eventually
reduce waste generation to acceptable levels while
continuously adhering to current legislation and accepted
industry best practices for waste management and disposal.
• Explore
medium and long term strategies for energy efficiency
into planning and development including the possibility
of overall Natural Gas use
• Provide
an incentive to both staff and students so that modes
of transport, which minimizes environmental impact,
are adopted.
• Achieve
efficient water, paper and electricity consumption
• Establish
a purchasing/receiving policy which will give preference,
as far as practicable, to those products and services
that are environmentally friendly
• Eventually
completely phase out of simulate experiments that
use chemicals that are harmful to man and the environment.
Reference is made here particularly to first year
labs.
• Provide
incentives for recycling paper, bottles and other
such products.
• Continue
to maintain the grounds and buildings of the campus
in an environmentally sensitive way, having regard
to protection of local natural habitats and preservation
of local biological diversity
• Take into consideration, the environmental factors when charting the
growth of the University. Development should seek, as far as is practical to
reduce harmful environmental impacts and to integrate new developments into the
local environment;
• Embark
on a campaign to promote national environmental policies
in conjunction with local, national and international
agencies.
• Provide
factual/research information to support environmental
protection policies with focus on international designation
of protected areas.
The enforcement and monitoring of this policy will be undertaken by the Environment
Strategy Committee and reported to the Planning and Development Committee.
