(5) Level I Requirements and Foundation Courses

1. Level I
   
   Students must satisfy the requirements for a minimum of 30 credits at Level I comprising:
   
   
   1. such Foundation courses as are required and offered.
      
      
   2. other compulsory courses in the chosen degree option as specified in the Faculty Handbook.
      
      
   3. free electives to bring the total credits to 30.
      
      
      
2. Foundation Courses
   
   As of 1998-99 all students registered in the University of the West Indies will be required to complete a minimum of 9 credits of Foundation Courses. These courses are Level I courses designed to promote sensitivity to, and awareness of, distinctive characteristic features of Caribbean cosmologies, identities and culture.
   
   
   1. The Foundation courses comprise:
      
      
      1. FD10A - English for Academic Purposes.
      2. FD12A - Science, Medicine and Technology in Society.
      3. FD11A - Caribbean Civilization.
      4. FD13A - Law, Governance, Economy and Society.
      5. any other course approved for the purpose by the Board of Undergraduate Studies.
         
         
   2. Students registered in the Faculty of Social Sciences will be required to include among such Foundation Courses English For Academic Purposes.
      
      
   3. The elective Foundation course FD13A - Law, Governance, Economy and Society will not count for credit in the programme of the Faculty of Social Sciences except with the permission of the Dean.
      
      
   4. Exemption in whole or in part from the requirements under [5.2(a- b)] may be granted from time to time by the Board for Undergraduate Studies.
      
      

(6) Requirements for Entry to Levels II and III

Students are required to satisfy pre-requisites (where they exist) for Levels II and III courses.
