Overview

The Criminology Unit is within the Department of Behavioural Sciences, Faculty of Social Science, UWI, St. Augustine. The Unit is coordinated by Professor Biko Agozino. There is ongoing collaboration by the three campuses of UWI to upgrade the Criminology programme into a regional Institute of Criminology with possible development of undergraduate criminology degree programmes in addition to the existing postgraduate programmes. Criminology and Criminal Justice was officially launched at the St. Augustine campus on February 24, 1997 as a project under the directorship of Professor Ramesh Deosaran who is now Emeritus Professor.

This Unit is committed to influence the field of Criminology and Criminal Justice through teaching, research and community service by:

• - Offering graduate degrees at the M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. levels
• - Developing criminology programmes at the undergraduate level
• - Initiating collaborative research and educational projects that delve into a range of criminological issues in the country, the region and globally.
• - Contributing in various consultancy and outreach activities where the Unit’s expertise could be offered to abate the crime situation.

The Unit also provides technical support and a wide range of facilities for relevant research and teaching to undergraduate and graduate students, and academic staff at the St. Augustine Campus.
