Opening Doors And Enhancing Careers
For more than forty years The University of the West Indies has created a time-honoured tradition of providing a quality education to thousands of students throughout the Caribbean. Our graduates are in demand internationally and regionally, and many have become highly respected leaders in Government, the corporate sector and in the Arts, often receiving international acclaim. Our lecturers continue to be in demand at international conferences and many continue our tradition of developing groundbreaking research projects.

As the demand for tertiary education continues to grow, The University must look for new and creative ways of expanding delivery of our product, without sacrificing quality. The Evening University at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine brings the flexibility, affordability and innovation of evening courses to meet the demands of the fully employed. We currently offer one certificate, one diploma, nine undergraduate and three Masters programmes:

Certificate in Public Administration, Diploma in Public Sector Management, BSc Banking & Finance, BSc Computer Science, BSc Economics, BSc Government, BSc Management Studies, BSc Psychology, BSc Public Sector Management, BSc Sociology, BSc Sports Management, LLM Corporate and Commercial Law, MSc International Relations and MSc Public Sector Management.

The entry and matriculation requirements are in keeping with those of the University and the degrees are all accredited. Our Evening University students have access to all of the facilities and amenities enjoyed by UWI students, including our Campus libraries, Student Activity Centre, computer laboratories and modern Sport and Physical Education Centre.

The Evening University is tailored to meet the needs of those who wish to enhance their professional development and advance their careers. It is very likely that the concept of the Evening University will be implemented on the other two UWI campuses. At St. Augustine, we are happy that we were able to take the initiative and point the way. We are opening the doors of The University to more and more students. This is an ideal opportunity for our citizens to earn and to learn. Make the time to seize it!

Message from the Co-ordinator

The Evening University exemplifies the fulfilment of various goals within the present Strategic Plan of The University of the West Indies as outlined in the Vice Chancellor’s report for 2004/2005; namely, it contributes to an expanded access to high-quality tertiary education; there is utilization of information technology as a teaching/learning strategy; and it demonstrates the recognition for and practice of improved student-friendliness by catering specifically for busy, working professionals and other persons who are unable to attend classes during the day. In addition, much like the School of Continuing Studies and the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC), the Evening University is a vital part of the UWI’s outreach effort to the community that supports it and that it represents and serves.

With the introduction in 2006/2007 of the Certificate in Public Administration and the Diploma in Public Sector Management civil service workers and those in executive and administrative positions, who by the very nature of their jobs are significant to the region's social, economic, and political development, are among the targeted so as to enhance their much needed skills and expertise.

The opportunity that the Evening University presents for persons of different ages, marital and employment statuses, educational backgrounds and interests to mingle, share and cooperate lends to a cross-cultural experience for the UWI student. Hence, the Evening University can play a significant role as a contributor to the overall cultural development of the region.

Being a UWI Evening University student is therefore an enriching way of belonging to, impacting and being impacted by a respected and respectable West Indian legacy and tradition. Enjoy this chance to advance, persevere, and you shall succeed.
