What
is Stress?
A common concern amongst University
students, stress is defined as external pressure that
affects you physically and emotionally. Moderate amounts
of stress may have beneficial effects as it helps to motivate
effectiveness and productivity. However, TOO MUCH STRESS
can cause depression, anxiety, anger, difficulty studying
and health problems including headaches, upset stomach,
insomnia, high blood pressure, and ulcers.
Avoiding
Stress
It is better to deal with a problem
as soon as it is identified, as this makes the problem
easier to solve. Leaving issues unattended, and avoiding
problems causes them to escalate often with serious consequences.
Student counselling is available, free of charge, to all
students of the The University of the West Indies. Attending
even a few sessions can make a difference in working through
personal problems and avoiding stress.
